GRAMMY'S REGGAE NOMINEES
LOS ANGELES, CA.: Jamaican reggae star Jimmy Cliff, who struck it big globally with his song “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” is back on top of the world – this time as one of five nominees in the reggae category of the 47th annual Grammy Awards. Cliff’s new album ‘Black Magic,’ released on the Artemis Records/Unique Corp label, apparently hit home with Grammy officials, who on Tuesday listed him among the nominees in the reggae group for next February’s awards. The album includes songs like ‘Fantastic Plastic People,’ which focuses on the cosmetic surgery craze and ‘Terror,’ and ‘War In Jerusalem,’ which deals with the September 11 terror attack and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, respectively. Also nominated in this category were other legends of this musical genre. They are Sly & Robbie for ‘The Dub Revolutionaries,’ album, released on the Sanctuary label and featuring songs like ‘Stepping Out A Space’ and ‘Peaceful Warrior’; Steel Pulse for ‘African Holocaust’ on the RAS/Sanctuary Records label which features ‘No More Weapons;’ and Toots & The Maytals for ‘True Love’ on the V2 Records label, which features guest tracks from Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths, Eric Clapton, Bootsy Collins, The Roots, Terry Hall, The Skatalites, Willie Nelson, No Doubt, Bonnie Raitt, Shaggy, Bunny Wailer and Rachael Yamagata among others. A group of ‘Various Artists’ on the ‘Def Jamaica,’ album and label, including Wayne Wonder, Devonte, T.O.K., Sean Paul along with Elephant Man, Buju Banton and Beenie Man, who have come under criticism from gay rights activists for perceived anti-gay lyrics, rounded out the final nomination in this category.
