GRENADA BENEFIT CONCERT BRINGS TOP CARIBBEAN ARTISTES T...
BROOKLYN, N.Y.,: Some of the Caribbean’s best calypso and soca artistes will be in Brooklyn this Saturday to help in the Grenada rebuilding effort. “This show is being held to aid Grenada’s medical needs,” says Derek Noel of Deck Productions, the primary producer of the event. According to Noel, the idea of staging this show was conceived as a response to the devastation observed during a visit to Grenada in the wake of Hurricane Ivan and as a result of consultation with New York-based Grenadian philanthropist, Dr. McAuley. Calypso King of the World, The Mighty Sparrow; the honeyed-toned Sugar Aloes; Grenada’s reigning monarch King Ajamu; Val Adams; Poser and Dominica’s top performer ‘The Hunter along with New York’s Casym Steel Orchestra are the artists set to rock Brooklyn College’s Walt Whitman Hall from 8 p.m. on Dec. 11. The Grenada Benefit Concert will be emceed by Island Radio AM 930 host, Spice Man Bob Fredericks, and BCAT’s Caribbean Classroom show host, John Crow. As a bonus, the audience will get a preview of a special video documentary on the beauty and destruction of Grenada. The documentary, which was produced by Ritch Image Productions of Brooklyn, contains commentary by Gerry Hopkins, JD. Grenadians are still recovering from the destructive hurricane, which left the nation’s healthcare system in shambles, destroyed damaged 90 percent of homes and almost totaled the agricultural and tourism sectors. A recent UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean assessment put the damages in Grenada at close to US$889 million. The Trinidad and Tobago Diocesan Association of New York is co-producing the show and sponsors include HardBeatNews.com, CaribPR.com, Caribbean Distributors, Compass Shipping, Veggie Castle Restaurant and Nostrand Travel Bureau.
