Working sessions aimed at establishing a common understanding on matters that would lead to linkages between Grenada and mainland China got underway in Beijing on Monday (December 13) ushering in the first full day of talks between the two countries. Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Hon. Elvin Nimrod met with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Zhou Wenzhong and other officials of the Chinese Foreign Ministry to discuss issues pertinent to the creation of economic and technical cooperation. Discussions focused on establishing a framework in preparation for Tuesday's meeting with China's Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing. The underlying principle is for a sense of comfort to prevail, relying on integrity and mutual respect for each other's sovereignty. Grenada is seeking to obtain support for its restoration and reconstruction efforts, brought about by the ravages left behind due to the passage of Hurricane Ivan on September 7, 2004. This topic prompted much discussion, as Prime Minister Mitchell pointed out that Grenada and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are vulnerable to natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. It is in this context that the Prime Minister sees globalisation forcing Grenada and other SIDS to forge partnerships and stronger linkages with the international community, in which China plays a major role. With redevelopment initiatives a priority, the Prime Minister said that with the diligence and resilience of the Grenadian people, the Spice Isle has an ideal opportunity to be rebuilt better than before, a goal that is definitely achievable. The Prime Minister, who is on his first Official visit to mainland China, further indicated that the welfare of Grenadian citizens is high on the agenda as a paramount feature of the Nation's future, which, in some measure, could rest with decisions out of this current round of talks.
