SALVATION ARMY /SARO LAUNCH HOUSE REPAIR PROGRAM IN ST....
The International Salvation Army and the St.Andrews Relief Organisation will formally launch a House Repair & Roofing Programme in the villages of Marquis,Soubise and Harford Village on Wednesday December 15, 2004 . The programme starts at 3.00 pm. Essentially, 50 families will have their houses and roofs repaired or replaced by the religious group from the USA --The Mennonites.Because it is a community effort, the receipients will be expected to assist. This is the first phase of a community based effort where up to three times more householders (150) will eventually be assisted. Besides the repair of roofs and houses, some of these families will receive new mattresses at selected collection points on a day to be announced. The families will also receive at least one new school uniform per school-age child in each household. Also, a Grand Christmas Programme with distribution of food baskets and a hamper of clothing will be given to these Salvation Army adopted families on Sunday December 19, 2004. On that occasion plans there is expected to be Christmas music and singing of Christmas carols in the good old way the Salvation Army knows. In addition to these programmes SARO has been working to facilitate an agricultural programme in which four chain saws have been made available to several farmers in the Morne Longue and Richmond areas. This effort is expected to be expanded when a total of 16 chain saws will be available. SARO is happy to note that the Salvation Army has provided seed money to jump-start the Computer/Internet (CORTIS) programme with the UNDP that is scheduled to start early next year in St.Marks before moving to St.Andrew. We in St.Andrew are truly grateful to the Salvation Army, the Government of Grenada, the Mennonites, the UNDP and the various volunteers that have worked with SARO as we try to bring relief in an equitable manner to the new Grenada after Hurricane Ivan.
