ADJUDICATOR DISPATCHES FINDINGS ON WICB/WIPA DISPUTE TO...
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) - The adjudicator appointed to look into the dispute between the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), dispatched his findings yesterday to Grenada Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell. Acting Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Adrian Saunders, was appointed - as arbitrator - by Dr Mitchell, who is chairman of the Caricom Sub-Committee on cricket, following lengthy negotiation meetings he had with representatives of WIPA, WICB and their advisors. Justice Saunders declined yesterday giving details of his report and said that will have to be done by the Grenadian prime minister. But he indicated that his findings would be binding since both parties to the dispute agreed to his adjudication and to accept his interpretation to clause 1K of previous WICB match/tour contracts, and other findings and/or recommendations. The dispute between the West Indies cricketers and the WICB escalated last month after at least 14 of the players - including captain Brian Lara and vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan - refused to sign a contract with the WICB. The players rebuffed the contract offer because they were denied the right to sign personal endorsements without the approval of the WICB. Their refusal led to an impasse in which the WICB refused to invite many of the top players, including Lara, Sarwan, and top opener Chris Gayle for training in preparation of the West Indies' tour to Australia early in January. However, following the Grenadian prime minister's intervention, the WICB agreed for the "sacked" players to participate in the three-week training programme that concluded on Tuesday in Barbados.
