MTV AUCTIONING POP ARITIST' MEMORABILIA TO RAISE FUNDS...
A handmade dress worn by Destiny's Child, a poster signed by Jennifer Lopez and a guitar signed by Wyclef Jean are on sale in an MTV Internet auction to raise money for hurricane victims in the Caribbean. Seventy-five percent of proceeds from the Caribbean Relief Auction will go to American Red Cross efforts in Haiti, Grenada and the Cayman Islands, according to MTV's website. The auction on www.mtvcharityauctions.com runs through Monday. Other items include a poster signed by Britney Spears, tickets to The Daily Show with John Stewart and a travel package to Grenada. "I think fans pay attention," Jean told The Associated Press. "They are aware of the situation and want to do what they can to contribute." The hip-hop star this week released a new music video, under the auspices of the U.N. World Food Program, to help Haitian victims of floods and rising political violence. He also has set up the charity Yele Haiti (www.yele.org) to help his impoverished homeland. The organization plans to help rebuild schools in slum areas and hold a free concert in Haiti in the spring. Floods killed at least 1,900 people and left another 900 missing and presumed dead when Tropical Storm Jeanne struck Haiti in September. Hurricane Ivan devastated Grenada in September, damaging 90 percent of buildings, wiping out much of the country's vital nutmeg crop and killing 39 people. Damage was estimated at more than US$900 million. Reprinted from Yahoo.com
