GRENADA FAILS TO ADVANCE IN CFU CUP
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Dec 20 – St Vincent and the Grenadines progressed to the third round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Cup, which is the Caribbean qualification to the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Vincentians defeated Grenada 1-0 here on Sunday to eliminate the “Spice Boyz” 4:1 on aggregate. Darren Francis scored the lone goal of the game played at the Cricket Stadium at Queen’s Park amidst dangling metal sheets, memories of the ravages of Hurricane Ivan. Francis curled an intended cross which caught goalkeeper Andray Baptiste by surprised and failed in his last ditch effort to push the ball across the cross bar. The Grenada team included English-based Byron Bubb as four players were serving a match ban from the Grenada Football Association (GFA). Striker Ricky "Curry" Charles, midfielder Atkinson Neckles, defender Patrick Modeste and goalkeeper Desmond Noel were banned by the GFA for playing in a domestic game after being warned that they risk the possibility of disciplinary actions. St Vincent won the first leg in Kingstown 3:1 last Sunday and will now await the winner of the Trinidad and Tobago/British Virgin Islands play-off. The Third Round winners will join the host Barbados in the CFU Final Round of the Digicel Cup from February 20-24 2005, which will qualify three teams to the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup, taking place from July 6-24 in the United States, and will also crown the Caribbean Champion.
