WINDIES CRICKET BOARD ACCUSES PLAYERS ASSOCIATION OF BR...
ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, Mon. Dec. 20: Just when fans of West Indies cricket thought the bickering between the board and the players union was a thing of the past, the issue has surfaced again. On Saturday, officials of the West Indies Cricket Board accused the West Indies Players Association of trying “… to undermine the mediation process to which all parties agreed at a meeting” on November 26 with Prime Minister of Grenada, Keith Mitchell. The board, in a statement of its own, claimed that WIPA's President and Chief Executive Officer, Dinanath Ramnarine makes it seem that the independent arbitrator ruled in favor of the players. “This is quite clearly a breach of the heads of agreement entered into by all parties at the mediation session in St. Georges,” stated the WICB, while adding that it “has scrupulously adhered to this agreement and will continue to do so as it works with all parties to chart a way forward in the interest of all West Indies cricket within the process as agreed at the 26 November meeting.” The Board’s comments comes just two days after adjudicator, Justice Adrian Saunders, sent his findings on the dispute to Grenada's Prime Minister Keith Mitchell who is chairman of the Caribbean Community's prime ministers' sub-committee on cricket and said details of his report would only be revealed by Mitchell. WICB officials also added that the team for the upcoming VB triangular One-Day International Series in Australia can only be finalized and announced at the end of the process given the issues involved. The players recently completed training camp for the upcoming tourney following an interim agreement reached over a public contract dispute regarding a clause in a new contract, in which new sponsor Digicel, prohibits players from endorsing any product for any rival company. A lot of the players already have contracts with former sponsor, Cable and Wireless. WIPA claimed they were bypassed in contract negotiations when the board invited players to a training camp. The two sides had agreed to try to reach a settlement by Dec. 15 but nothing has been formalized to date. Reprinted from hardbeatnews.com
