GRENADA’S PM SEES PEOPLE AS DISPOSABLE DIAPERS, SAYS OP...
ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: "It’s like a man being in a longstanding relationship with a woman and the next day he gets married to another woman without letting the other woman know.” That is the kind of dishonesty and betrayal that was shown to Taiwan by Grenada’s Prime Minister according to the Public Relations Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and parliamentary MP Nazim Burke. Burke told Caribbean Net News that Dr. Keith Mitchell’s visit to China came as a shock and an embarrassment to the opposition and the people of Grenada. According to Burke, Dr Mitchell misinformed his underlings about the trip; telling them it was a trip to England. NDC had no inkling of the trip until the morning that the Prime Minister was leaving for China said Burke. He said Mitchell’s ethics are questionable since he did not go through the proper parliamentary procedures to inform the opposition and the nation about the trip by way of letter; which constitutionally should have been read out by the Speaker of the House. Burke indicated that Dr Mitchell’s yearning was to get hard cash from the people of China into his hands; but so far it has been reported by other media that Mitchell returned to Grenada empty handed from his trip to China. “Keith Mitchell has no friends; he has interests and sees people as disposable diapers," said Burke. The opposition MP told Caribbean Net News that nine million United States dollars was already given to the Government, and another forty million was pledged by the Taiwanese for the reconstruction of the Stadium. However, the Prime Minister was displeased that the Taiwanese decided to undergo the construction of the stadium on their own instead of placing the funds in his hands. “The indication from the Taiwanese is that they do not want a hit and run facility as was evident when the stadium was under construction by Imbert Construction out of Trinidad and Tobago.” Shortly after the construction of the Grenada National stadium, aroused much controversy when huge cracks was discovered and a series of other technical problems became apparent. Burke told Caribbean Net News that that the Taiwanese do not want a cheap stadium, nor do they want to indulge in making illegal payments that could encourage the misuse of funds. He further indicated that the Taiwanese are not prepared to buy and sell their integrity. Burke said this style of politics that has been demonstrated by Dr. Mitchell in the past is typical “pork-barrel politics”. Burke told Caribbean Net News that “international donor agencies are not entrusting hard cash in the hands of Grenada’s Prime Minister for fear of the lack of transparency and accountability”; he said the issue of Dr. Mitchell collecting US$500,000 in a briefcase, among other issues, has resulted in dark clouds hanging over his credibility. The opposition MP said, “The Grenadian leader went to China in desperation because he does not place people at the top of his agenda.” Caribbean Net News was told by Burke that, despite the uncomfortable situation created by Dr Mitchell, “Taiwan will not sever its relations with Grenada, though continuance will pre-suppose an estranged relationship." When Caribbean Net News contacted the press secretary Nancy Mc Guire for a response, she said the Grenadian leader will make an address on Monday night regarding the visit to Beijing.
