GRENADIANS AMONG TOP OECS SWIMMERS AT T&T MEET
Grenada's TUESDAY WATTS was one of the dominant young swimmers at this year's Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad & Tobago (ASATT) Invitational. The meet, held 16-19 December at the Marlins Aquatic Centre in Westmoorings, featured some of the best swimmers from the twin island republic, as well as the leading athletes from Barbados, St Lucia and Grenada. Watts, competing for the Grenfins Swim Club, claimed five individual gold medals during her three-day sojourn in T&T. She won the girls' 400m freestyle (4:50.00) by 10 seconds from Samantha Rahael of Marlins. She took the 200 free (2:19.00) and 100 free (1:03.50) as well, but lost to La Joya Torpedoes' Chloe McMillan for the 50 free title. In the backstroke events, Tuesday momentarily got her revenge on Chloe, winning in 1:14.00, exactly four seconds faster than her Trinidadian rival. But Chloe won the 50 back, clocking 32.40 seconds to 34.50 from Tuesday. The Grenadian phenom took third in the 200 back. The other gold for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Female Sports Personality of the Year came in the 200m individual medley, where her time of 2:40.00 was good enough to beat Rahael by nearly three seconds. In the 50m butterfly, Tuesday was third behind McMillan and Rahael. Also competing in the 11-12 division, Samantha La Qua flew the Grenada flag with pride. Sami swept the breaststroke in her division, winning the 50 (38.00) by more than two seconds from Rahael, the 100 (1:25.50) by just under two seconds from fellow OECS competitor Sara Georges of St Lucia and the 200 (3:08.00) by less than a second from Nathania La Pierre of Blue Dolphin Swim club, BDSC. Georges, swimming for Trident Swim club, was third in the 50 and 200 races. In the 15 & over division, two of Sara's compatriots did themselves proud. 2004 Olympian NATASHA GEORGEOS won the 800m freestyle and had an exciting duel with Ayeisha Collymore of BDSC in the butterfly events. Natasha won the 50 (29.86) and 200 (2:31.33) but finished second in the 100. Competing for Rodney Heights Aquatic Centre (RHAC) she also took silver in the 100 freestyle and 400 individual medley. Fellow RHACer Charlotte Palmer-Martin was second in the 800 free. She won the 400 free, was second in the 100 backstroke and was third in the 200 backstroke. The sixth OECS girl to medal was DANIELLE BEAUBRUN , who swept the 13-14 girls' breaststrokes. She won the 50 in 35.34, the 100 in 1:18.32 and the 200 in 2:52.33, beating Kimba Collymore of BDSC each time. Three OECS boys came away with seven individual medals. Bradford Worrell of RHAC was second in the 1500m freestyle. He was third in the 100, 200 and 400 free. MARTIN RENWICK of Grenfins was twice third, in the 50 and 200 breaststroke for 13-14 boys. Jonathan Calderon of Trident was third in a close-fought 15 & over 100 backstroke. Reprinted from oecsathlete.com
