The Government of Mexico will provide 50 full undergraduate scholarships for Grenadian students to study at Mexican universities, commencing with the fall semester in 2005. The offer of scholarships was formally presented to Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell on Tuesday, December 21 by Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Luis Ernesto Derbez. “This is a most welcome development. On behalf of the Government and people of Grenada I want to express our deepest appreciation for these scholarships,” Prime Minister Mitchell said, adding that this is an early Christmas gift from the Government and people of Mexico to the Government and people of Grenada. Following the passage of Hurricane Ivan, Prime Minister Mitchell had written Mexican President Vicente Fox seeking support for Grenada’s recovery. The provision of scholarships, as well as 34.5 tons of humanitarian aid, which began arriving in St. George’s today, and a commitment of future financial help, was outlined by Minister Derbez in his presentation to Prime Minister Mitchell. “Please convey our appreciation to President Fox. While we have passed the relief stage, Hurricane Ivan has created financial difficulties for many families. The scholarships are the most important element of this support, as it goes to the heart of the future of our Country,” Prime Minister Mitchell said. The 50 scholarships, which will be provided annually, will cover tuition, accommodation and transportation. Successful candidates will be required to study Spanish for six months, commencing in March 2005 in preparation for university in August 2005. The Department of Human Resources in the Prime Minister’s Ministry will coordinate the selection process for eligible candidates. Source: Office of the Prime Minister
