GRENADIANS AND VINCENTIANS SAVED IN CHRISTMAS MIRACLE
KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent: The families of a group of 12 Grenadians and Vincentians who were missing at sea for several days returned home on Thursday 23rd to cheers, hugs and tears of joy. The drama began when the 12 left Port Kingstown aboard the Grenadian-registered 'MV Study Us' on Saturday 4 December for the two-day journey to St. Maarten. Over seven days ago, Commander of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard, David Robin, revealed that the ship failed to arrive in St. Maarten and the 12 OECS nationals along with two persons of Dutch nationality, were deemed missing at sea. News of the missing vessel spread quickly and a search which included the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard went into operation. Caribbean Net News made several calls to the Coast Guard stations in Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Eustatius seeking information on the missing vessel. Last Thursday officials in St. Vincent contacted Caribbean Net News with information that the passengers who were deemed missing aboard the 'MV Study Us' were all "safe and sound" in the Dominican Republic. Contact with the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police confirmed this. In another development, the country's Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, said that his Government had taken steps for the Vincentians to return home. Gonsalves went on to reveal that the country's Ambassador to Washington, Ellsworth John, had been in contact with the authorities in the Dominican Republic, in an effort to look out for the well-being of the Vincentian nationals. In speaking with some of the passengers by telephone, Caribbean Net News understands that the 'MV. Study Us' had developed engine trouble and drifted for several days. Reports are that the passengers were rescued by a smaller boat and taken to the Dominican Republic, while the 'MV. Study Us' is alleged to have "broken up" on the high seas.
