BEWARE OF PHONE SCAM USING CARIBBEAN AREA CODES
NEW YORK, N.Y., Thurs. Dec. 30: A top San Antonio company is warning Caribbeans and other U.S. residents to be wary of responding to unsolicited e-mails, phone calls, numeric pages or voice mail messages that direct them to an 809 or 823 area code. This telephone scam, according to SBC Communications Inc., can catch consumers off-guard since these are legitimate area codes in the Caribbean. The exception is that they operate like 900 numbers in the U.S. Typically these messages encourage victims to call back to the area code number on an important matter, such as a prize win or family medical emergency. Consumers who return the calls are charged international call rates on their telephone bills. Company officials also advise if you have questions about charges on a telephone bill, you should contact the carrier with whom the charge originated, whose name and toll-free telephone number should be printed on the same bill page as the charge in question. Often, the problem can be resolved with a single phone call, they added. Reprinted from hardbeatnews.com
