PETROCARIBE, CRIME FOR TODAY'S CARICOM AGENDA |
|
|
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - Caribbean Community leaders will resume their work on the agenda for the 17th Inter-Sessional Meeting at the Hilton Hotel here this morning in caucus with sensitive issues that include crime and security and the Venezuela-initiated intra-regional PetroCaribe project.
According to informed ministerial sources, the caucus (heads only with no more than two advisers) would involve "frank discussions" on Trinidad and Tobago's role as a regional energy provider, as well as the "substantial concessions" to flow to Caricom states that have signed on to PetroCaribe.
Trinidad and Tobago, which will be seeking the co-operation of its Community partners to enter into a bilateral energy arrangement with the United States of America as a "third party", and Barbados, which has a special oil facility deal with the twin-island republic, are the only Caricom members not involved in PetroCaribe.
Yesterday's deliberations, conducted in plenary sessions, dealt with the advancing of arrangements for the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME), among other matters.
Spearheading the discussions on the CSME was Barbados' prime minister, Owen Arthur. He was warmly praised at yesterday's public session by St Lucia's prime minister Kenny Anthony for "relentlessly championing the cause of the CSME" for which he has lead portfolio responsibility.
