GRENADA ISSUES TRAVEL ADVISORY AGAINST JAMAICA
Jamaica's regional neighbour, Grenada, has joined the United States and Canada in issuing a travel advisory for its citizens in light of the malaria outbreak on the island. Health officials have cautioned Grenadians travelling to Jamaica to protect themselves against mosquito bites while visiting the island. Acting Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bert Brathwaite, issued a public advisory on Saturday, based on recommendations from the Trinidad and Tobago-based Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC). The Health advisory also urged travellers returning from Kingston, Jamaica, who experience symptoms of malaria, such as fever, headache, nausea and vomiting to immediately seek professional medical care and inform their health care provider that they have visited an area currently experiencing a malaria outbreak. Dr. Brathwaite said, however, that the Ministry and CAREC do not recommend using malaria preventive medicines when travelling to Jamaica. There have been a total of 140 cases of malaria since the outbreak three weeks ago. Reprinted from radioja.com
