CATEGORY:SPORTS(CRICKET) ---------------------------- By Trevor Thwaites Inside Grenada correspondent Thursday January 04,2007 GRENADA: Windward Islands Players - opening batsman Devon Smith and fast bowler Deigton Butler - are aiming to produce sterling performances to grab the attention of the selectors in the 2007 Regional Cricket Season. Both are keen to get back on the West Indies team for forthcoming 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup in the region. Smith was certainly one of the leading batsmen in the recently concluded series between the West Indies and Sri Lanka reserves in the region. He scored a century and three half centuries to help the regional team get the better of their opponents. The stylish left-hand opening batsman who has notched up a celebrated century against the world champions Australia, is keen to become a regular member of both the West Indies test and one-day teams. “I am looking to score around 500 runs this season, with at least three centuries. I really want to be consistent for the Windward Islands and impress the selectors for a recall. Smith, who has been dismissed several times, playing at balls outside the off side stump, told reporters that he has been working on that weakness. “My short selection has improved. I am spotting the balls earlier and judging the line and length better. I have not even been pulling and cutting much lately, but playing more so down the v- through mid-off and mid-on.” “This way, I have been occupying the crease for longer periods”, he said. Smith is hoping to produce a ton of runs this season and help the Windward Islands win both the four-day and one-day regional competitions. Another of his teammates fast-bowler Deighton Butler, whose batting has been on the improve is also keen to feature in the West Indies make up for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. “ I am all geared for the season. I am disappointed that the Windward Islands Tournament was abandoned. I am anxious to prove myself.” Butler performed reasonably well for the West Indies in the one-day series against New Zealand earlier in the year, where he picked up wickets in tight spells. “I am looking to bowl well and capture around 30 wickets in the four-day competition. I am aiming to bowl economic spells and capture wickets consistently in the one-day series. I will definitely be trying to capture the attention of the selectors for the upcoming World Cup. 40 wickets this season and three hundreds (runs) is my goal”, the Vincentian fast bowler said.
