EARLY ELECTION ?
Grenadians may just be greeted by an early election call this year. Some nationals, together with top political affiliates, told Caribbean Net News that they predict elections could be called within the next six months, while some believe right after Cricket World Cup. The last poll in Grenada was held in 2005, when the New National Party (NNP) defeated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by a slim 7 to 8 majority. Political activists told Caribbean Net News that the commencement of the continuous registration process is a clear indication that the government may soon start to polish its campaign machinery. NDC’s Political Leader Tillman Thomas said that his party is ready for the challenge. He said the country needs a new government, since the ruling NNP has no mandate. In recent times the NDC has lashed out at the government for wrongdoing while in public office, and they strongly believe that the NDC is the one to bring the country forward. The NDC leader stated that the party has been hosting its series of public meetings in an effort to be ready for when the election date is called. This widespread speculation of an early election call has not been confirmed by the Keith Mitchell administration, and the NNP party remains silent on the issue.
