EVACUATION ORDERED FROM NEAR VOLCANO
Montserrat's British governor has ordered the evacuation of some areas close to the latest eruption and said police would enforce the decision. The Soufriere Hills volcano belched a cloud of ash more than five miles into the sky early Monday. The explosion also sent a flow of volcanic material cascading down the volcano's northwestern side. The government has advised about 50 households on the northwestern side of the volcano's base that their homes would be at risk from gas and debris if the volcano dome collapses. The Governor Deborah Barnes-Jones signed an evacuation order, and from Monday night it became illegal for people to remain in that area. "People in the affected area know who they are and should work urgently on packing up and arranging for alternative accommodations", she said in a radio address. "It (is) an offense to be in the unsafe zone, and the police will prosecute offenders". Overall scientists say there's no danger to the safe zone in the north where approximately five thousand people live. The volcano became active in 1995, and an eruption two years later buried much of the south including the capital of Plymouth, killing 19 people. Reprinted from bbccaribbean.com
