Reigning KFC Cup one-day champions Guyana will begin their title defence when they clash with Windward Islands at the Tanteen Recreation ground today.
Half-centuries from skipper Narsingh Deonarine and Azeemul Haniff ensured Guyana denied the Windward Islands first innings points in the Carib Beer four-day game after their depleted bowling attack predictably struggled for consistency.
Although the Windwards have only won the title twice - the last being in 2000 in Jamaica - in recent time they have been one of the top regional teams in the shorter version of the game.
They lost in the semi-finals to Barbados in the last competition after defeating Guyana in Grenada in the 1989 final to clinch their first regional crown at any level.
