US DENIES BISHOP BURIAL KNOWLEDGE
The US Defence Department has rejected claims that it knows where the remains of former Grenada prime minister Maurice Bishop and other revolutionary leaders were buried in 1983. The statement followed a call from the current Prime Minister, Keith Mitchell, for those convicted of murdering Bishop and other cabinet ministers to reveal where the remains are. The killings followed a coup on 19 Oct, 1983 by radical elements within Bishop's leftist government. It was followed by a United States-led invasion six days later. A spokesman for the US Defence Department dismissed any suggestion that the US was in the know. Navy Commander Jeffrey Gordon said: "These allegations have been floating around for some time, decades in fact, without any credible evidence to back the claims." Those convicted of executing Bishop, four Cabinet ministers and six of their supporters have said they do not know the whereabouts of the remains. Bishop's Mother But Dr Mitchell said he believed they could solve the mystery. He said: "They should have a conscience and come forward and release the pain of the families." The slain prime minister's mother, Alimenta Bishop, has repeatedly called for the bodies to be located for proper burial. The Privy Council in London, Grenada's highest court, has said it will rule next month on the validity of the convictions of Bishop's killers. In December, Grenadian authorities released three of the 17, citing good behaviour. Reprinted from bbccaribbean.com
