OECS BAR ASSOC. CONCERNED ABOUT SELECTION OF NEW CHIEF ...
The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Bar Association has slammed sub regional leaders for the manner in which they are selecting a new Chief Justice for the Supreme Court. President Nicole Sylvester says regional lawyers were concerned that Justice Brian Alleyne, who acted as OECS Chief Justice for nearly two years, is being overlooked for the post after his exemplary performance on the job. At their recent summit in Antigua the OECS leaders discussed the appointment of a permanent Chief Justice. But Mr. Alleyne's name was not among the two being considered for the post. Miss Sylvester says while the Bar was not aware of the identities of the other persons being considered, over the past 21 months Justice Alleyne has demonstrated his suitability for the job. The OECS Bar President said the manner in which the matter was being handled could give a sense of political interference in the judiciary. She pledged that the OECS Bar would not remain silent on the matter and called on regional heads to reconsider the exclusion of Justice Alleyne from the selection process.
