DUTCH COUNTRIES SEEK MEMBERSHIP IN OECS
Another group of Caribbean islands is seeking to join the membership of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Officials said interest in acquiring OECS status is coming from the Dutch countries of St. Marteen, Saba and St. Eustatius and already one Netherlands Antilles government minister is visiting St. Lucia and other OECS countries for talks on possible membership. During a stop over in St. Lucia, Minister of Constitutional Affairs Roland Duncan said St. Marteen already trades with a number of the OECS territories. He said the response from OECS leaders whom he had so far met during his visit to St. Vincent, Dominica, and St. Lucia, as well as from officials at the St. Lucia-based OECS Secretariat, has been encouraging.
