CATEGORY:CUSTOMS -------------------- By Wallace J.A Inside Grenada correspondent Saturday February 03,2007 ST.GEORGE, Grenada - On Tuesday of this week, Customs officials in Grenada were able to confiscate a quantity of counterfeit Cricket World Cup 2007 merchandise entering the country from New York. About forty-four headrest covers designed for motor vehicles and containing the words “World Cup Cricket 2007” along with an emblazoned image of the tournament’s trophy were seized by the Customs Department. The shipment was made from New York to a local recipient in Grenada. The intended recipient of the merchandise has the right to contest the seizure within a one-month period. If the intended recipient fails to contest the seizure or is unsuccessful in the attempt, the goods seized become the property of the state. In the past, many unauthorized individuals, from both within and outside of the region, have sought to capitalize on major functions to illegally make large profits. The coming of CWC 2007 to the Caribbean and the security framework which accompany an event of this magnitude has led to increased vigilance by the relevant authorities, making this counterfeit detection possible. It is hoped that long after CWC is over, customs and law enforcement officials will continue to maintain their watchfulness and continue to sustain a zero tolerance approach to trading in counterfeit merchandise.
