CATEGORY:SPORTS(CRICKET) ----------------------------- By Wallace J.A Inside Grenada correspondent Friday February 09,2007 ST.ANDREW’S, Grenada: The cricketers from the St.Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) will do battle against their counterparts from the Mt. Rose Seventh Day Adventist School at the Plains Playing Field in Sauteurs today. Both teams have made it through to the finals of the 2007 Independence Cricket Competition. SAASS was the first team to qualify after defeating the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School (GBSS) at the SSU Grounds at Point Salines last week. SAASS won this encounter by 2 wickets. Batting first, GBSS was bowled out for 142 in 24 overs, after being 72- 0 in 10 overs. Arthur George top scored for GBSS with 38 runs while Taide Carmichael from SAASS had bowling figures of 4 for 31. SAASS scored 146 for 8 in 22 overs to clinch a 2 wicket victory over their old arch-rivals. Leon Calliste top scored for SAASS with 74runs (not out) while Danny Alexander had the best bowling figures for GBSS (5 for 39). Mt. Rose SDA made it through to the finals on Monday of this week after convincingly defeating the St. David’s Secondary School by a wide margin. Batting first, Mt. Rose scored 143 for 8 in 26 overs. Jerold Paul from MT. Rose top scored with 36 runs while V. Whiteman from St. David’s Secondary had bowling figures of 3 for 25. In reply, St. David’s Secondary was scuttled out for a paltry 46 runs in 19 overs. Gary Charles from Mt. Rose SDA emerged with bowling figures of 4 wickets for 8 runs. The clash of the ‘Titans’ begins at 12 noon today and will feature some of Grenada’s brightest young cricketers from two schools with rich backgrounds in cricket. Mr. Terry Alexander, manager of the SAASS Cricket team, thinks his team stands an excellent chance of emerging victorious in the encounter The SAASS Team, he said (in an exclusive interview with Grenadian Connection), is a very experienced one, comprising of players who represented Grenada at both the Under 19 and the Under 15 levels. The Mt. Rose Team, however, should never be ruled out since they have been to the finals many times before and have won the tournament on some occasions. Both teams have excellent bowlers and batsmen; therefore, it is hard to select a team as the clear favorite to win the 2007 Independence Trophy. Who will emerge winner? Well….only time will tell.
