CATEGORY:SPORTS(CRICKET) --------------------------- By Wallace J.A Inside Grenada correspondent Saturday February 10,207 GRENADA: The St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) is the winner of the 2007 Independence Cricket Competition. SAASS defeated the Mt. Rose SDA by 4 runs in an enthralling encounter at the Plains Playing Field in St. Patrick’s yesterday (Feb. 09). Batting first, SAASS was able to amass a total of 146 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 30 overs, after a rather ‘shaky’ start. The top scorer for SAASS was Akim Charles who scored a polished 49 runs. The cricketers from Mt. Rose made an impressive chase and the game was only decided after the last ball was bowled. They were 143 for 8 at the end of their 30 overs, giving SAASS victory by a mere 4 runs. The match generated quite a lot of excitement from start to finish and the spectators who were gathered at the venue to witness the encounter enjoyed every moment of the game. The finals of the Independence Cricket competition was also broadcasted live by one of the FM stations on the island. This is the first time in about 12 years since SAASS has won the competition, even though the school would have made it through to the semi-finals on many occasions. The school would have also won the junior competition on three occasions before it was discontinued. Manager of the SAASS team, Mr. Terry Alexander, and coach, Mr. Michael ‘Niko’ Felix, were very pleased with the performance of their cricket team. They told Grenadian Connection that the players were focused on winning the tournament this year and they made every effort to ensure that that dream became a reality. The SAASS cricket team is now shifting their focus to the next inter-secondary schools’ cricket competition scheduled to start sometime in April.
