THREATENED STRIKE MAY HAMPER CWC PREPARATIONS IN GRENAD...
A major strike is being threatened by workers at the Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) in Grenada, which could hamper the country's preparations for next month's Cricket World Cup 2007. The Technical and Allied Workers Union (TAWU) and CCC have had many battles in the past and this time the union president General Chester Humphrey says he will not bend his head on this issue. CCC has a number of road projects to be completed in time for the Cricket World Cup. The union says it is taking issue with the company over outstanding issues, some of which include application of rates of pay to the different class of workers and supervisory staff. Another area of contention is the salary payment, which the TAWU says is substantially low. Humphrey, at a press conference on Friday, said CCC management should settle the outstanding issues, failing which undesirable consequences may arise. He added that in the coming week a major strike by the CCC workers is imminent if no response is received and also made a call for an emergency meeting with the labour department. Humphrey, in informing the media, said the last meeting held on the matter between the union, CCC and the Labour Commission ended with a decision to issue a letter to the Labour Minister Clarice Charles. Humphrey alleged that after the meeting, which was held on January 30, a letter was sent to the Labour Minister and forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office. Since then TAWU’s President General said no response has come from the authorities. Some residents have expressed the view that this is not good news for Grenada, since much of the road works have to be completed in less than two months, to ease access when Cricket World Cup rolls around.
