GOVERNMENT CLARIFIES PHYLLIS COARD'S POSITION
Grenada's Attorney General, Elvin Nimrod, says the lone woman convicted for the killing of former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop in a 1983 coup has not been freed but is still under her sentence. Phyllis Coard, the wife of former deputy Prime Minister Bernard Coard, who is also serving time along with 12 others for the execution of Bishop and some of his Cabinet colleagues, is in Jamaica but is being monitored and will continue serving time. The Privy Council on Wednesday ordered that the Grenada 13 return to Court for re-sentencing after their lawyers argued that their death sentence should be quashed and the men released. In February 2000, Phyllis Coard was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour which doctors said would require treatment by an oncologist. Because Grenada has no oncologist or facilities to treat cancer patients, Mrs. Coard was released on medical condition to seek treatment abroad for six months in the first instance. It was also agreed that she be allowed, on medical grounds, to apply for extensions of this temporary respite from her prison term. Reprinted from radioja.com
