CARICOM PRIME MINISTERS PAUSE EXPANSION OF FREE MOVEMEN...
CARICOM prime ministers have placed a hold on expanding the categories of Caribbean nationals enjoying free movement across the region. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer of Antigua and Barbuda said the leaders decided against expanding the list to include artisans as was originally planned at a previous summit. He said the year-old CARICOM Single Market is still a work in progress and most countries were yet to implement all legislative changes necessary to allow for the free movement of the six categories previously approved. At present, university graduates, media workers, athletes, performing artistes, teachers and nurses are covered under the free movement initiative. Meanwhile, as the wider CARICOM grouping grapples with the free movement of other categories of workers, Grenada's Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell believes this is the only way to go forward. He says any decision to allow more CARICOM nationals to move freely, will receive Grenada's full backing. Reprinted from radioja.com
