WINDWARD ISLANDS DEFEAT BARBADOS TO BOOK THEIR PLACE IN...

CATEGORY:SPORTS(CRICKET) --------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA Saturday February 17,2007 by Wallace J.A THE WINDWARD ISLANDS on Friday (February 16) defeated Barbados in a semi-final encounter to book their place in the finals of the KFC Cup limited overs cricket competition. It is the first time in seven years that the Windwards have made it through to the finals of a regional one-day tournament. The cricket match was played at the Arnos Vale Sports complex in St. Vincent. Batting first, Barbados made a meager 155 runs before they were scuttled-out in 47.2 overs. The damage was done primarily by Deighton Butler and Captain Rawle Lewis, whose combined assault cost the Barbadians 7 wickets. Butler had the impressive bowling figures of 4 for 30 off 10 successive overs and Rawle Lewis 3 for 29. Floyd Reifer top scored for Barbados with 42 runs. Chasing a target of 156 for victory, the Windward Islands were able to get there in 44.1 overs, loosing 7 wickets in the process. The most impressive batsman for the Windward Islands was Grenadian and West Indian left-handed opening batsman, Devon Smith, who celebrated his recent selection to the West Indies World Cup team by smashing an unbeaten 75 runs in 107 balls. Smith was subsequently adjudged Man-of-the-match for his brilliance with the bat. The Windward Islands will take on Trinidad and Tobago today (Saturday 17) in the finals of the KFC Cup limited overs cricket competition at Arnos Vale Sports Complex in St. Vincent.
