GRENADA LAUNCHES POVERTY CHECK
The Grenada government has launched a survey to determine the true extent of poverty in a country devastated by a hurricane in 2004. The Grenada government said in a statement it needed an accurate assessment of poverty conditions in the light "significant changes in the social, physical and economic landscape". According to government figures, the last survey, in 1999, revealed that 32% of the population could be classified as poor based on a poverty line of EC$3,262. Some 13% were below the poverty line -- that is being unable to to meet the costs of supplying their minimum requirements for food. The study also revealed that the poor have limited access to health services, education, adequate housing and social services. September 2004 could have made the situation worse. That's when Grenada was devastated by Hurricane Ivan, which destroyed or damaged 90% of housing and infrastructure. The government statement said: "The results of the survey are expected to generate information that will guide the future social and economic policies and programmes of the government." The survey will be conducted in association with the Caribbean Development Bank. Reprinted from bbccaribbean.com
