CATEGORY:SPORTS(DONATION) ------------------------------ INSIDE GRENADA Saturday February 24,2007 by Wallace J.A TELESCOPE, St. Andrew’s: The Sports Department and athletes of the St.Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) has received some much-needed support from the SAASS Alumni Association based in New York. Yesterday (Friday Feb. 23), the school received a shipment of approximately thirty-five spikes from the New York group. This was made possible through the kind initiative of Joseph Lewis, also known as ‘Bobiley’ (a former outstanding athlete of the school) as well as the president and other members of the association. Earlier on, the organization provided the challenge trophy for the school’s annual sports meeting at Victoria Park, Grenville. The gift from the Alumni Association has come at a very opportune time, since the coaches and athletes of the school are at the moment intensely absorbed in making the necessary preparations for the Intercol games, scheduled to take place at the Athletics Stadium in Queen’s Park on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (February 27 & 28). SAASS has developed an awesome reputation over the years as a powerhouse in the realm of athletes, nurturing the skills and talents of world-class athletes like 400m sprinter, Alleyne Francique, and triple-jumper, Randy Lewis, among others. The school has made sporting history in Grenada by being the only school on the island to win the Inter-secondary schools’ athletics championship in the boys’ division for eight consecutive years. Although the school has not been able to win the coveted title over the past few years, Mr. Lester Blache, spokesman for the SAASS Sports Department, believes that his school has athletes of high caliber and if things unfold the way his department expects them to unfold, then he is confident that SAASS can reclaim the Intercol championship this year. Organizing and successfully competing in sporting activities are very costly exercises, and the Management and staff of the school, through this media house, wish to publicly express their appreciation to Mr. Aidon Persue and the SAASS Alumni Association in New York for their kind assistance and look forward to receiving continued support from this organization in the future.
