CATEGORY:SPORTS(CRICKET) ------------------------------ INSIDE GRENADA Thursday March 01,2007 by Wallace J.A SIR VIV RICHARDS and Courtney Walsh both share the view that the West Indies cricket team could be the first team to win the World Cup on home soil. Sir Viv was a member of the West Indies team when the regional side won the first two ICC World Cup titles in 1975 and 1979. No host of the World Cup matches has ever won the title. Richards said that he believes that West Indies will not only do well, but they have what it takes to win the coveted ICCWorld Cup Trophy. Courtney Walsh, one of the fast bowling legends of West Indies cricket, is of the view that the selectors have picked a young, exciting group of players who will do the region proud. West Indies World Cup squad comprises of Brian Lara [Capt.], Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dwayne Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Ian Bradshaw, Corey Collymore, Jerome Taylor, Denesh Ramdin, Devon Smith, Lendl Simmons, Daren Powell, Kieron Pollard. Cricket World Cup 2007 is scheduled to kick off in the Caribbean early next month. The West Indies should be playing their first match against Pakistan on Tuesday March 13, followed my Zimbabwe on March 19 and Ireland on March 23 (all three matches will be played in Jamaica). All four teams are in Group D. Grenada is scheduled to host six Super Eight matches in the second stage of the tournament. The first game at the newly constructed National Stadium will begin on Tuesday April 10 and the final match will be on Friday April 20. The vast majority of the population in Grenada will be throwing their support behind the regional side. CWC 2007 will be the biggest undertaking of any kind to come to the Caribbean, and Grenadians, both at home and abroad, are encouraged to view the matches at the National Stadium and be a part of this sporting history.
