FOREIGN DIPLOMATS ATTACKED IN GRENADA
Is this a plot or just a group of young boys who continue to get themselves involved in criminal acts? That’s the word from many Grenadians following two attacks on two of the country's foreign diplomats. Last week, the Italian consul to Grenada was attacked at her home in the south of the island, leaving her with a fractured noise and swollen face. According to reports reaching Caribbean Net News, the intruders entered the consul’s home requesting money and, after refusing to comply, she was beaten by the masked men. Within a week of that incident, the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) is now investigating another incident in the south of the island in which the Cuban ambassador’s husband was attacked and seriously injured by unknown intruders. The incident was reported to the Police Headquarters around 1.15am on Saturday, and Commissioner of Police Winston James has mobilised and ordered the resources of the RGPF to apprehend the person or persons responsible. Isaac Saavedra Valdes, aged 62, was hospitalised and was reported to be in critical but stable condition. Ambassador Maria Delgado Valdes was also attacked but did not suffer any serious injuries. A statement from the RGPF indicated that the Minister of National Security Senator Einstein Louison has visited Ambassador Valdes and has assured her that no stone will be left unturned in bringing the person or persons responsible to justice. Commissioner James has also ordered increased security presence at all diplomatic residences and postings as this is the second incident in less than a week in which a member of the diplomatic corps was brutally attacked. The release stated further that the Ministry of National Security and the Royal Grenada Police Force are responding to these incidents with the highest priority and urgency, as this can give rise to concern in the international community and negatively impact the country, as it continues to prepare to host games during the ICC Cricket World Cup from April 10, 2007. Commissioner James is also seeking the assistance of the general public in bringing this matter to a speedy conclusion and anyone with information that can assist the police should contact the nearest police station immediately. Authorities were investigating whether the crimes were related but have little to go on since no arrests have been made in either case, a police spokesman said. Nothing was taken from the Cuban diplomat‘s residence. Meanwhile Senator Louison and Commissioner James have assured the nation that the resources of the Royal Grenada Police Force will be fully utilised to maintain peace and stability across the nation.
