Navy vice Adm. Joseph Metcalf III, who led US forces in the invasion of Grenada more than 13 years ago, died earlier this month at the age of 79. Known for heading up the all four branches of the US military in the invasion of the Caribbean nation in 1983, Metcalf died March 2 in Washington after suffering several strokes, the Washington Post reported. The US invasion Oct. 25, 1983, was made necessary when a Marxist military faction took over control of Grenada by executing 16 top government officials. Despite the overall success of the military operation, Metcalf later was at the center of a controversy linked to the invasion. He and several members of his staff were officially reprimanded for trying to bring firearms back from Grenada as souvenirs.
