PAKISTAN'S CRICKET COACH DIES IN JAMAICA

CATEGORY:BREAKING NEWS ---------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA Sunday March 18,2007 by Wallace J.A Former English test cricketer, Bob Woolmer, who has been coaching the Pakistan Cricket team since June 2004, has died at a Kingston hospital today at age 58. Coach Woolmer was found unconscious in his hotel room shortly after the ignominious but historic defeat of his team by Ireland yesterday. This resulted in Pakistan’s elimination from the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. Woolmer played test cricket for England (19 tests). He interrupted his test career by signing for World Series in 1977 then ended it prematurely by joining the rebel South African tour of 1981-82 (at that time, South Africa was excluded from international cricket because of the odious system of apartheid then practiced by the South African government). Woolmer made a name for himself as one of the top coaches in international cricket after a four-year period with South Africa. After a brief stint as the ICC’s high performance manager, Bob Woolmer was announced as Pakistan’s coach in June, 2004 and signed a contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board to remain in charge until the 2007 World Cup. He was known as a very creative coach and tried to instill in his players a genuine love for whatever they did. The cricket fraternity has lost a distinguished member and he will no doubt be missed and be mourned by millions the world over.
