CATEGORY:FUNERAL ---------------------- INSIDE GRENADA Thursday March 22,2007 by Wallace J.A ST.ANDREW’S: Grenada’s first female Leader of the Opposition, Mrs. Winifred Strachan, who passed-away last week, was today interred at the Grand Bras Cemetery. Her funeral ceremony was held the Grenville Roman Catholic church and was well attended by people from different walks of life. They all turned to bid their final farewell to an outstanding daughter of the soil. Mrs. Strachan, also known as ‘Aunty Strachan,’ ran on a Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) ticket in the 1990 general elections. She won her seat in the rural constituency of St. Andrew’s SE and, as it turned out, she became the Opposition Leader in the country. Prior to getting into politics, Mrs. Strachan was a teacher and had a strong liking for arts and handicraft. In 1999, during International Women’s Day commemoration, Mrs. Strachan received a special award for her outstanding services to the country. The award was given to her by the Division of Gender and Family Affairs and the Grenada National Organization of Women. As a mark of respect for Mrs. Strachan, a one-minute silence was observed at 1.00pm today. Aunty Strachan is no longer with us, but her selfless service towards the development of Grenada will long be remembered. She has definitely left an indelible mark on the history of Grenada.
