NDC HOLDS SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION AT WESTERHALL

CATEGORY:POLITICS --------------------- INSIDE GRENADA Monday March 26,2007 by Wallace J.A GRENADA: Yesterday, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) held its annual convention at the Westerhall Secondary School in the parish of St.David. The theme for the convention was “Prepare for Change; Organize and Mobilize for a Better Grenada.” This political event comes exactly one week after the ruling New National Party held its 21st convention at the Grenada Trade Center in St. George’s. The NDC’s convention started around 10:00am and there was am impressive turnout of delegates from the different constituencies throughout the island dressed in their party colors (yellow). During the morning session (closed session), the Deputy Chairman, Mr. Ferron Lowe gave an overview of what was expected from the delegates. This session saw animated discussions taking place among delegates as they went about their business. At the end of the morning session, the NDC’s executive had only minor changes made to it. There was a new deputy recording secretary and a new deputy general secretary (one of three). The afternoon session (public session) was well-attended and party supporters heard the feature address delivered by the Hon. Cecil Joseph, the Mayor of Roseau and an important political figure of the ruling Dominica Labour Party headed by Roosevelt Skerrit. In his address to the gathering, Mr. Joseph emphasized the importance of being dedicated to the task ahead and ensuring that party puts the necessary structures in place so as to emerge successful in the next general elections. He spoke about how the Dominica Labour Party was able to win the elections of 2005. The closing remarks at the convention were delivered by the NDC’s political leader and Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Tillman Thomas. He gave an overview of what the NDC will do once in government. He informed the gathering that the NDC will move to pass Freedom of Information legislation during their first 100 days in office. Mr. Thomas also outlined a number of measures an NDC government will put in place to rehabilitate the country’s agricultural sector.The NDC leader spoke about the establishment of a work brigade to assist farmers who are being affected by the scarcity of labour.
