GRENADIAN AUTHORITIES SEIZE SHIPMENT OF INFESTED PINEAP...
The authorities in Grenada on Tuesday seized a shipment of pineapples bound for the sister isle of Carriacou as part of the ban on the importation of the fruit from two CARICOM member states. Grenada has banned the importation of pineapples from Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. The ban was imposed due to the presence of worms that enter the fruit destroying it from the inside. A statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister said that the 23 boxes of the fruit had not been claimed by anyone and that the pineapples would be dipped in boiling water to kill any existing pests before they are destroyed. Those persons in Grenada wishing to import fruits, plants or seeds from overseas must have the required permits and failure to do so could result in a fine of just over US$2,000 or a one year jail term.
