GRENADA READY FOR SUCCESSFUL SUPER EIGHT TOURNAMENT
In common with the other host countries, Grenada is doing its part to ensure that it stages successful Super Eight games in the ICC Cricket World Cup tournament. Caribbean Net News carried out a survey on the readiness of some of the key aspects of the country's Cricket World Cup preparation. The country has undertaken a number of bridges and road projects to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during the games; however, it was announced by the Minister of Sports Roland Bhola that some of the these projects will not be fully completed, but will nevertheless be done to a satisfactory level. Some of the projects were hindered by industrial action taken by the workers of the contracted firm Consolidated Contractors Inc. The Minister also urged the general public to carpool on match days to avoid heavy traffic congestion in St George’s. A meeting was expected to be held with officials of the road project to come up with ideas that can help speed up the process in time for April 10. With regard to the health sector, Caribbean Net News was informed that, while the first phase of the hospital project will not be completed in time, structures have been put in place. At a press conference recently health officials announced that facilities will be made available at various community clinics to deal with minor emergencies, since the hospital will be used for serious emergencies or players injuries. It was reported that the West Indies team will arrive in Grenada on April 2 and, according to Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, this is good news. The country has so far recorded 70 percent in ticket sales and visitors have begun to arrive. The Ministry of Culture is also doing its part to ensure that the world gets a glimpse of what Grenada has to offer culturally and otherwise. They have announced that a number of activities will be staged for the ten days of cricket. These include: Mini Carnival, cultural village and parish days. Caribbean Net News took to the streets on Wednesday and discovered that 50 percent of Grenadians say they will not go to the games because World Cup was not designed for West Indians. According to farmer David Antoine, “I don’t think we are ready, the rules are too much and the ticket price is terrible,” he said. One vendor said, “This is not our style, too much rules and regulations.” While some continue to oppose, many still believe, however, that this is the best thing that could happen in Grenada.
