MITCHELL CALLS FOR PRIVATE SECTOR SUPPORT FOR CWC; APRI...
Grenada's Prime Minister Keith Mitchell has called on the private sector to support the island in hosting the World Cup matches. Mitchell, speaking on a nationally televised discussion programme at the cricket stadium, said Grenada needed to show the world that the country deserved its quota of matches despite the challenges of rebuilding after two devastating hurricanes. He said the government had already played its part by announcing that Tuesday, the day of the West Indies-South Africa Super Eight match, would be a national holiday. 'We call on the private sector to play its part and to give all the time to their workers who are able to access tickets. There should be no restrictions as far as the availability of people to attend the games is concerned,' he said. 'The government is taking the first step ... so we say to the nation you shall have Tuesday also as a holiday.' He continued: 'The world is looking at us and we must ensure that we let them know that the region was a successful host despite the performance of our team.' Mitchell said he believed the region needed to spend more time ensuring the World Cup was a success despite the problems experienced, including the mysterious death of Pakistan's coach, Bob Woolmer, and the below-par performance of the West Indies team. Mitchell, who also chairs the CARICOM prime ministerial subcommittee on cricket, admitted that things would be done differently if the region were to host an international tournament again. He was referring to the many restrictions involved in the event, which have been severely criticised by people across the region, including former West Indies cricket players. 'It is clear that some of the things that were accepted by our negotiating team may not have been the wisest thing in terms of the success, in terms of the involvement of the people,' he said. 'I think that it was better to have had the World Cup and expose us to the international community in a positive way which we have really done but recognise some of the difficulties and weaknesses.' Grenada host their leg of the World Cup from April 10-20. Reprinted from etimes.com
