11 DAYS STRAIGHT OF FISH FRIDAY
- The Gouyave Fish Friday Festival Committee in collaboration with Grenada Distillers Limited presents Fish Friday April Extravaganza from Monday 9th through to Friday 20th, April 2007, entertaining the public for eleven (11) straight days (except Sunday 15th) with succulent dishes, cultural presentations and open-air dining. According to Reece Sam, Fish Friday’s Marketing and Public Relations Officer, “every day from Monday 9th to the 20th will be like a hyped Fish Friday! We‘re basically bringing the usual Fish Friday into Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and even Saturday! We all know what’s happening in our region about that time, and we believe that with Fish Friday being the biggest community-tourism product in Grenada right now, we will be adding a significant part to what the island has to offer to both locals and foreigners by providing them with a place to eat, meet and greet throughout this exceptionally festive period”. The weekly Gouyave Fish Friday Festival has grown from strength to strength over the past twenty-two (22) months, and has been preparing actively for the Fish Friday April Extravaganza for the past four (4) months. A packed programme of cultural entertainment is planned for every night. Speaking on the plans of the Fish Friday Festival Committee, Dr. George Vincent - Committee Chairman stated that they are expecting the return of many foreign nationals who would be looking for a “lime”, congregating with the new visitors, ever-patronising locals, students from the St. George’s University and the hotels. “Planning sessions have been held with all stakeholders to ensure that this April fiesta is practical. The vendors are excited and have confirmed their sources for acquisition of sufficient raw materials to operate and serve fresh food every evening”. Security arrangements have been put in place, and there will be sufficient parking space and seating areas to accommodate the crowds. I recently came from Grenada and passed through Gouyave many times. I have never been very impresed with the look of the place ever since the 1950s, and I am still not. I really think that Gouyave is in need of a serious "revamping". Many of the buildings along the main street have long passed condem stage and are in the rotting, decaying stage. Gouyave is not the place best suited to host any kind of eating extraveganzer; The place is an eyesore, and we should clean it up. That's my humble opinion.
