CATEGORY:SPORTS ---------------------- INSIDE GRENADA Wednesday April 18,2007 by Wallace J.A LEWIS HAMILTON, the 22-year-old Englishman with Grenadian roots, became the first racing driver in the history of the Grand Prix to finish on the podium in the first three races of his debut Formula One (F1) season. Lewis came in second in his race in Bahrain on Sunday. Martin Whitmarsh, the chief executive of the McLaren team (of which Hamilton is a part) believes that Hamilton has tremendous potential and could go on to become the greatest racing driver of all time. Three-time champion, Sir Jackie Stewart has opined that the young prodigy could go on to win in his first season while the McLaren-Mercedes team owner, Frank Williams, has described him as ‘superhuman.’ Hamilton’s father (Anthony Hamilton) named his son Lewis after the US Olympic gold medal winning athlete, Carl Lewis, probably expecting his son to become a great sprinter in his later years. That did not happen, instead the young phenomenon - who was described as been hyperactive in his younger years - took a liking to racing and was able to catch the eyes of the 'best in the business.' Hamilton paternal grandparents emigrated to the United Kingdom from the Spice Island (Grenada) in the 1950s in pursuit of better economic opportunities. His grandfather worked on the London Underground (an electric railway system that covers much of London and some neighboring areas). Hamilton was educated at The John Henry Newman School.
