CATEGORY:SITUATION UPDATE ----------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA SATURDAY April 21,2007 by Wallace J.A GRENADA: On Thursday of this week, the Upper House of Parliament (Senate) passed the highly controversial amendment to Section 6 of the National Parks and Protected Areas Act. The amendment to the Act gives the Governor General the power by proclamation to allow for the sale of lands designated as national parks to private investors after first consulting with the National Parks Advisory Council. The bill was presented in the Senate by Senator Ann David Antoine, Minister with responsibility for the environment. She said that Government was looking for a win/win situation and that all things have been considered in terms of the development and protection of the environment. The bill was passionately debated in the Upper House with Senators George Prime, Arley Gill and Chester Humphrey voicing their strong opposition to its passage. Those who opposed the bill are of the opinion that Government may have some hidden motive and it is not doing enough to protect the environmental heritage of the country. Following the passage of the bill in the Lower House last week Friday, an emergency meeting was held on Tuesday of this week involving the media and various stakeholder groups in the country. At that meeting, delegates discussed possible ramifications of the bill and agreed to a course of action with a view to educate the public and register their concerns over the passage of this controversial amendment to the National Parks and Protected Areas Act.

NATIONAL PARKS AND PROTECTED AREAS ACT PASSES IN SENATE...
I must say that the potential for buyers to be able to buy area designated as national parks is extremely dangerous. As the African Chiefs are in other developing countries know that God is not making new land, they areno longer selling their land. Grenada is too small in size to privatize those areas where our local people are free to move about and enjoy themselves and the environment. Money is not the only answer to our national problems. I hope the people making those decisions really thought this through and is not short sighted thinking about today for today and not 20, 30 or even 50 years out. Please do not touch our rainforest because it is our source of drinking water.

i am very interested in the pasing of such and act based on the fact that i am a student where i am majoring in manangement of natural resourses, and this i something that the goverment should pay particular atention to and be very very careful with ammendments like these, the people who holds these very very important enviromental positions should have a good understanding of the preservation of the enviroment and have a good idea what is sostenible development , and what the recprocations could be with the abuse of such acts.i hope that the people in my beloved grenada is taking note that in todays world almost all developing contries and developing contries are passing acts and bills exactly the oposite to what they are passin in my beloved country greanda.please revise such and act and try not to make decisisons that will affect our country ,kids and enviroment in the future and the same thing which we may be trying to maximize by passing such and act the economy. lets think of tomorow . please.
