WEST INDIES CRICKET COACH RESIGNS
click
MAJOR DEVELOPMENT ---------------------- INSIDE GRENADA Monday April 23,2007 by Wallace J.A According to information reaching the news desk of Grenadian Connection, the coach of the West Indies Cricket Team since October 2004, Bennett King (from Australia), has resigned from his position. The 42- year-old Bennett King, who cane to the West Indies with an impressive record from Australia (where he was based before coming to the Caribbean) has not been able to succeed in changing the flagging fortunes of the West Indies Cricket team. King has now joined six other coaches who have stepped down from their positions following the elimination of their teams in the 2007 Cricket World Cup – the others are Greg Chappell of India, Andy Pic of Canada, Peter Cantrell of the Netherlands, Dav Whatmore of Bangladesh, Duncan Fletcher of England and Adrian Birrell of Ireland. King’s resignation means that he will not be accompanying the West Indies Cricket team to England next month. The West Indies will be playing their first test match against the English team at Lords (England) in 24 days time. Two other persons from the West Indies team who have decided to call it a day are Brian Lara - one of the greatest batsmen that have graced the cricket field - and medium pacer Ian Bradshaw, who has recently announced his retirement from international cricket. Bradshaw, who is 32 years old, has played 62 ODIs and 5 tests for the West Indies. It is also alleged that Mr. Ken Gordon, President of the WICB (West Indies Cricket Board), might be contemplating resigning from his post. Mr. Gordon is believed to have written to the executive committee of the WICB on April 17 advising that he intended to resign. He was requested to reconsider his decision and agreed to do so for the time being, It is widely believed that Ramnaresh Sarwan, who was Brian Lara’s vice-captain, will lead the West Indies on the tour of England. It is not known at this time who will replace Bennett King as the new West Indies coach. King’s contract was due to run until November of this year.
