GRENADA IS BACK IN BUSINESS, SAYS PM
The country has successfully staged its leg of the Cricket World Cup Super Eight games at the National Stadium on April 20 and, although some local business entities could not hold on to some of the profits expected, to them just being a part of the games was a thrilling experience. Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell in his address to the nation this week said Grenada had succeeded in convincing the international community that Grenada is indeed back in business, serious business better than before. “Our successful hosting of this magnificent, world class event is further testament to that fact,” he said. “The country has benefited disproportionately, there is no denying that before the tournament investment inflows into our country were buoyant. The interest demonstrated as a result of World Cup Cricket will be a significant fillip in advancing our country as a primary destination for investment.” The Prime Minister also paid tribute to all the volunteers, security forces internationally, regionally and locally for a job well done. According to him, the visitors must not be forgotten, for they too played an integral role with regard to foreign exchange. In his address, he said the major legacy for Grenada coming out of the successful hosting of this event is the country’s ability to achieve despite the tremendous odds and criticisms. “We have virtually leap-frogged our infrastructual development by five years," he said. Mitchell also highlighted some of the benefits derived from the event. Some of these include: A first class national cricket stadium -- Cricket World Cup 2007 will establish a legacy that Grenadians today as well as those for generations to come would be proud of; the promotion of Grenada to the millions of spectators via television was priceless; the infrastructual and other developmental works will attract investors and the exercise serves as a good test for the CSME initiative among others.
