GRENADA: May Day or International Workers’ Day will be celebrated in Grenada tomorrow (May 01). The celebration will be held under the theme, “Defending workers’ rights; demanding good governance.”
Workers in Grenada that are affiliated to the umbrella Trade Union Council (TUC) will gather at Progress Park in St. Andrew’s and then march through Grenville and into Victoria Park where a massive rally will be held.
May 1st, International Workers' Day, commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, and is recognized in every country except the United States, Canada, and South Africa. This despite the fact that the holiday began in the 1880s in the United States, with the fight for an eight-hour work day.
During May Day celebrations in Grenada, workers usually display placards and chant songs which reflect their grievances and highlight their aspirations.
This year, the Grenadian Trade Union Council will recognize those who have contributed to the further development of the trade union movement in Grenada. Former President of the Public Workers’ Union, Mrs. Lauret Clarkson, and Alicia Pierre of Carriacou - who served as a shop-Stewart for over ten years - are two persons that are expected to be recognized during tomorrow’s function.
