MWAG’S STATEMENT ON WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY
St.GEORGE'S, GRENADA: The Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) will like to salute yet another observance of World Press Freedom Day, which is being observed around the world this May 3 rd. On this special observance, we want to call on our colleagues at home and abroad to be ever vigilant in protecting the freedoms of the press, which we all appreciate, are central to the upkeep of our various democracies. Indeed those freedoms cannot be taken for granted in the face of political and commercial pressures. As we observe World Press Freedom Day, we note with concern, more dark clouds on the horizons in Grenada that seek to undermine those very freedoms. The Government of Grenada has drafted the Broadcast Authority Bill, which it is seeking to bring into law in the country. After a preliminary review of the Bill we are concerned with several sections. MWAG believes all media workers should review this Bill and offer alternative recommendations for considerations. As written, if passed into law, the Bill will give the Minister of Information undue powers to control the broadcast media and to determine what people must or must not hear. We call on the Government to make every effort to accommodate the input of stakeholders. Also we are requesting that Government reaffirm a clear position of non-interference in the media. We believe that a policy or an Act is fundamental for the growth and maintenance of the broadcast industry since it will set standards and ensure ethical practice.
