CATEGORY:SPECIAL EVENT -------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA FRIDAY May 04,2007 by Wallace J.A GRENADA: The ruling New National Party (NNP) of Dr. Keith Mitchell has announced that the party intends to hold a massive rally at Progress Park, St. Andrew’s on Sunday May 6, 2007.The starting time for the rally is 3:00pm. One of the major reasons given for the staging of this rally is to celebrate Grenada’s successful hosting of the 2007 Cricket World Cup. Grenada was selected to host six games in the World Cup and the country has received much praise from locals as well as regional and international visitors and journalists. After the first stadium was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, many people thought that Grenada’s ‘package’ would have gone to some other country. At that time most of the other World Cup venues were well on course with their preparations and some skeptics were of the view that it would be impossible for Grenada to recover in time for cricket’s biggest extravaganza. Prime Minister Mitchell, however, made it his duty to ensure that Grenada got to keep its matches and he was very instrumental in getting the Government and People of China to rebuild the nation’s premier sporting facility in record time. The new stadium at Queen’s Park, has been described as one of the most beautiful cricket facility in the world. The NNP team has announced that there will be entertainment at the rally from some of the nation’s top artists. There are already rumors in circulation that the Prime Minister might just call an early election and may make the announcement at the gathering. Others are suggesting that he might announce his team that will be contesting the next general election. Grenadians will have to wait until Sunday, however, to find out whether there is any truth to these rumors.
