GRENADA TO HOST OECS HEADS MEETING
Grenada will host OECS Heads of Government for the 45th Meeting of the OECS Authority, May 24 and 25. The Meeting will be chaired by incoming OECS Chairman, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica who will be having his first stint in that position. He takes over from the outgoing chairman Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer of Antigua/Barbuda who is also completing his first hold of the post. The major talking point for the two-day meeting will be the ongoing work on the creation of an OECS Economic Union. The Heads will receive a revised draft Economic Union Treaty and are expected to give a mandate for the OECS Secretariat to conduct a region-wide public education campaign on the Treaty. The campaign is expected to involve the direct and active participation of the Heads of Government. Discussions at the meeting will also touch on the Cricket World Cup legacy, air and sea transportation in the OECS, the Petrocaribe initiative, and OECS strategic responses to the changing geopolitical environment. Heads will examine OECS positions in the ongoing EPA negotiations; the WTO – Doha round, implementation of CARICOM Bilateral agreements, and CARICOM-Central America negotiations. The two day business sessions will be preceded by an opening ceremony on the evening of Wednesday, 23rd May. The Meeting takes place at the Grenada Grand Beach Hotel.
