CATEGORY:CONSTRUCTION --------------------------- INSIDE GRENADA TUESDAY May 22,2007 by Wallace J.A TELESCOPE, St.Andrew’s: Members of the St.Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School’s (SAASS) fraternity should have good reason to smile and be happy. The much needed repair work on the school building started on Monday of this week (May 21, 2007). The SAASS project is being funded by the World Bank and the European Union to the tune of EC$3,084,698.43. The contractor for the project is Mr. F.A. Jeremiah. The project entails the renovation/ rehabilitation of the existing facilities. A large section of the old school building received a serious pounding from Hurricanes Ivan and Emily in 2004 and 2005 respectively. The entire roof of the structure was destroyed and cracks have since appeared in the foundation of the building. As a result of this, all the classrooms on the building’s top floor had to be abandoned. In order to allow students to return to the classroom and complete their secondary education (after these two devastating hurricanes), the Government of Grenada was able provide temporary classrooms on the school’s basketball/ netball court. The cost of these structures amounted to just over EC$400,000. These temporary classrooms have been housing approximately 70% of the school’s population since 2004. The work on the school’s building is expected to progress quickly because authorities will no doubt be keen to see the project completed before the beginning of the new academic year in September, 2007.

I am pleased that the project has started and that things will only get better for SAASS and those that teach and learn therein, Telescope and the wider community. I hope and pray that all goes well with the project; that it is completed.
